Niemann Beats Liang in Paris, Climbs to Career-High World No. 12

By ChessGrandMonkey3 min read

Hans Niemann has beaten Awonder Liang 7.5-4.5 in their 12-game classical match at the Blitz Society venue in Paris. Niemann went undefeated across all twelve games, winning three and drawing nine, to claim the match convincingly and push his live rating to a career-high 2742.

That number puts him at world No. 12 on the live rating list, ahead of World Champion Gukesh. Not bad for a player who was at the center of the biggest cheating controversy in chess history just four years ago.

The Match

The format was 12 games at classical time control (60 minutes + 30 second increment), played April 10-15 at the Blitz Society in Paris. The loser would donate $10,000 to a charity of the winner's choice.

Niemann came in as the higher-rated player and the favorite. He justified that billing from the start.

Games 1-2 were draws, though Liang missed a promising opportunity in Game 2. Game 3 was the turning point. Liang had a chance to force a draw by repetition but passed it up, overplaying his position in the endgame and handing Niemann the first win of the match.

Games 4-7 were all draws, but not without drama. In Game 7, Liang reached a winning queen ending but couldn't find the conversion. The position slipped, and so did his best chance to level the match.

Game 8 was Niemann's best performance. Playing Black, he outplayed Liang in a complex middlegame to take a commanding 5-3 lead with four games remaining. At that point, the match was effectively over.

Game 9 was the shortest decisive game of the match. Niemann won again, clinching the match at 6-3 with three games still to play.

Games 10-12 were formality draws. Game 10 lasted only 15 moves.

Match Scorecard

| Game | White | Black | Result | |------|-------|-------|--------| | 1 | Niemann | Liang | ½-½ | | 2 | Liang | Niemann | ½-½ | | 3 | Niemann | Liang | 1-0 | | 4 | Liang | Niemann | ½-½ | | 5 | Niemann | Liang | ½-½ | | 6 | Liang | Niemann | ½-½ | | 7 | Niemann | Liang | ½-½ | | 8 | Liang | Niemann | 0-1 | | 9 | Niemann | Liang | 1-0 | | 10 | Liang | Niemann | ½-½ | | 11 | Niemann | Liang | ½-½ | | 12 | Liang | Niemann | ½-½ |

Final: Niemann 7.5 - 4.5 Liang

Rating Impact

The numbers tell the story of two careers moving in opposite directions:

  • Niemann: 2742 live rating (career high), climbed from world No. 20 to world No. 12
  • Liang: Dropped from world No. 24 to No. 31

Niemann is now rated above Gukesh (the reigning World Champion) and Sindarov (the freshly crowned Candidates winner) on the live rating list. Whether those numbers translate into top tournament invitations remains to be seen, but the trajectory is unmistakable.

What It Means

Niemann's rise in 2026 has been steady and difficult to ignore. After the settlement of his legal dispute with Chess.com and Magnus Carlsen in 2023, he spent two years rebuilding his competitive career. This match result in Paris is the clearest signal yet that Niemann belongs in the conversation about the world's top players.

Liang, for his part, had a frustrating match. He generated winning chances in Games 2 and 7 but failed to convert either. Across twelve games, he did not win a single one. The $10,000 charitable donation stings less than the missed opportunities.

The next chance to see both players in classical action will be at upcoming super-tournaments later this spring. With Norway Chess 2026 on the horizon (May 25 - June 5), the chess calendar remains packed.
